Paul Kagame Endorses Raila – In a significant move that bolsters Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson position, Rwandan President Paul Kagame has officially thrown his support behind the seasoned Kenyan politician. Kagame, speaking to NTV, highlighted Odinga’s impressive performance as the AU High Representative for Infrastructure Development, emphasizing his qualifications for the top AU role.
Acknowledging Odinga’s contributions, Kagame expressed his respect for the Kenyan leader, stating, “I respect Raila Odinga; I respect his struggles. He did a good job, [and had] a full grasp of it. We will give him our support and wish him well. Not only the support to be there but even when he is there, we’ll give him support for Africa to succeed.”
This endorsement comes on the heels of Raila Odinga’s visit to Rwanda on March 8, 2024, where he engaged in discussions with President Kagame on matters pertaining to the region and Pan-African interests. With Kagame’s support, Odinga secures another crucial endorsement, making Kagame the 7th Head of State to back Odinga’s candidacy.

President William Ruto of Kenya and Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda have already pledged their votes in favor of Raila Odinga. Additionally, Odinga mentioned during a past address that other leaders, including Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu, South Sudan’s Salva Kiir, South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa, and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Félix Tshisekedi, have expressed their support for his AU chairperson bid.
Raila Odinga aims to succeed the current chairperson, Moussa Faki of Chad, who will conclude his two-term tenure next year. Faki, who assumed the position in 2017 and secured a second term in 2021, will pass the baton to his successor, setting the stage for a new chapter in the leadership of the African Union Commission.
